Though this text contains a plethora of examples and complete programs for everything discussed, it is not intended as a standalone teaching tool. I was most engaged by the first and last topics. Which topics the reader finds interesting will be a matter of taste. These topics are intended to illustrate the use of the ideas in the first part, but they also require other Mathematica facilities, particularly its graphical power. The “Applications” part covers infinite structures, Fibonacci numbers, fractal curves, minimal surfaces, and system programming. Listings of the programs developed here are given in the text as well as on diskette. The chapter on abstract data types is quite difficult, but the others are readable and informative. The book falls into two parts: “Paradigms of Programming” and “Applications.” In the first part, the main topics are abstract data types, polymorphism, object-oriented programming, and databases. He assumes that the reader is an active Mathematica programmer, but the software on an accompanying diskette will permit the less-experienced programmer to use and develop what is described. Maeder has written a readable book on using the Mathematica programming language in a number of ways and for a variety of applications. ![]()
